O fracasso da democracia ocidental
O fracasso da democracia ocidental explicado pelo antigo membro do parlamento inglês, Tony Benn:
"The idea of choice depends on the freedom to choose, and if you're struggling with debt, you don't have freedom to choose. People in debt become hopeless and hopeless people don't vote. If the poor turned out and voted for the people who represent their interests, it would be a real democratic revolution. They (the established governments) don't want it to happen, so they keep people hopeless and pessimistic.
(...) There are two ways in which people are controlled. First of all, frightening people and second, demoralizing them. An educated, healthy and confident nation is harder to govern. The top 1% of world's population earns 80% of the world's wealth. It's incredible that people put up with that. But they're poor, they're demoralized and they're frightened, and therefore, they think, perhaps, the safest thing to do is to take orders and hope for the best."
No caso português, acrescentaria que, aliado a este estilo de governo (infelizmente replicado nas empresas), sofremos de uma falta de civismo e excesso de inveja crónicos. Continuamos a preferir falar da vida dos outros, invejar os sucessos alheios e votar nos bem-vestidos, nos bem-falantes, nos que nos dizem que está tudo bem, que estamos no primeiro mundo e que a Europa nos salvará, por obra e graça dos espírito Santo. Por isso, é bem feito. Temos o país que merecemos.
Quanto aos que, como eu, continuam a resistir, a refilar, a enfrentar, espera-nos uma vida de olhares de soslaio, de carreiras estagnadas e de amizades esquecidas. Um preço muito, mas muito pequeno a pagar pela verdadeira liberdade intelectual.
